Cycling Shoes Header

Welcome to Cycling Shoes – we have buyer’s guides, reviews and tips to help you make the right choice.

The choice of shoes is vast, but for simplicity we have split the guides into three: road, mountain and leisure – we hope you enjoy using our site.

Types of Cycling Shoes

Why use specific shoes for cycling?
Many cyclists start using trainers... however trainers are designed to bend, which is fine for running but when pedalling efficiency is taken into account you waste a vast about of your hard earned energy through shoe flex. Cycling shoes are made specifically for cycling, and as such are a very efficient way of transferring energy into the pedalling action – making life that little bit easier for you.

Clipless pedals and shoes
It is highly recommended that you use a clipless pedal system with your shoes – most cycling shoes are SPD/clipless compatible (some only) so it is worth at least trying a clipless system. Some cyclists say that it is the one most valuable upgrade they have made and the performance benefits are vast.

Specific shoes
Taking the presumption that you choose to ride a clipless pedal then you can choose a shoe that is specific to the type of riding you do. Road shoes use the three bolt type used on cleats from Look, Time, Shimano etc and are very stiff with little walking grip. Mountain bike shoes are more flexible and have good grip and use the two bolt “spd” type cleat. Leisure shoes generally are very flexible and offer comfort over outright performance.
